Petrified Wood, as the name suggests is the fossilised remains of vegetation. It is the result of trees or tree-like plants having completely turned to stone. All of the organic material has gradually been replaced by minerals, such as quartz. The process occurs underground when wood becomes buried by sediment. This process will usually take millions of years to complete.
